Frequently Asked Questions

Q: "If I work 40 hours in a week, will I still be eligible for overtime?"

A: "Yes.  Your overtime rate will be paid based on a weekly average of your total earnings, including bid rates."

Q: "If I have worked on my unit less than two years, can I bid on shifts on my own unit?"

A: "Yes. At the discretion of your manager."

Q: "If I am a 36 hour full-time employee and I bid on an 8 hour shift, will I be paid 8 hours of overtime?"

A: "No. The first 4 hours will be at your bid rate and the remaining 4 hours will be at your calculated overtime rate."

Q: "Are health benefits included?"

A: "No. However, St. Mary Medical Center will deduct income and other payroll taxes (see next answer)."

Q: "Must I pay my own income taxes, Social Security and Medicare?"

A: "St. Mary Medical Center will deduct payroll taxes from your paycheck. Since you are considered to be an employee and not an independent contractor, St. Mary Medical Center will pay the employer portion of Social Security and Medicare taxes."

Q: "Can I bid multiple times for the same shift?"

A: "Yes. If your first bid was rejected but the shift is still listed, you can bid a lower rate to see if that will be accepted."
